How often should I change smoke detector batteries?

Change the battery in every smoke alarm once a year. A single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds means that battery is already low. Alarms with a sealed 10-year lithium cell are the exception: there is no battery to swap, and the whole unit gets replaced at 10 years.

How do I know the battery is going?

The alarm tells you before it quits. One short chirp every 30 to 60 seconds, no smoke in the house, is the low-battery signal on nearly every residential alarm sold in the U.S.

There is some runway built in. UL 217, the safety standard every listed alarm is built to, requires that low-battery chirp to keep sounding for at least seven days. So a chirp on Tuesday is not an emergency. It is a deadline.

The test button will not catch a weak battery for you. Pressing it checks the horn and the electronics, and a battery that is nearly flat often still has enough left to pass. That test is worth doing monthly, but it is not a battery check.

The blinking light is not a battery check either. On most alarms a red blink every 30 to 60 seconds is the power-on heartbeat and says nothing about the cell: why is my smoke detector blinking red?

What battery does a smoke detector take?

Three kinds, and the manual on the back of the unit names which one.

Most alarms made before roughly 2015 take a 9-volt block. Newer battery-only units usually take two AA cells. Sealed units take nothing, because the lithium cell is welded in and rated to last the alarm’s full 10 years.

Use alkaline unless the manufacturer’s manual specifically calls for lithium. Skip rechargeable NiMH cells entirely. They sit at 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 and they self-discharge on the shelf, so an alarm running on them can drop under the low-voltage threshold months early.

A 9-volt alkaline runs $2 to $4. A four-pack runs $10 to $15. For a five-alarm house that is one purchase a year, under $20.

Why does the chirping always start at 3 a.m.?

Because that is when the house is coldest, and battery voltage falls with temperature.

A cell sitting just above the low-voltage threshold at 70 degrees drops below it when the thermostat setback pulls the hallway down overnight. The alarm starts chirping. By the time you have found the ladder, the furnace has run, the house has warmed, the voltage has recovered, and the chirping has stopped.

Alarms in unconditioned space swing hardest: attics, garages, and the hallway outside an upstairs bedroom with a cold-air return nearby.

The fire service has pushed the line “change your clocks, change your battery” since the 1980s for exactly this reason. Twice-a-year daylight-saving weekends land close enough to annual that people could hang the job on something they would not forget.

Do hardwired smoke alarms need batteries too?

Yes, and it is the step people skip.

A hardwired alarm carries a backup battery so it keeps working when the power is out, which is when house fires from candles and space heaters spike. That backup gets replaced on the same annual clock as a battery-only unit.

On most hardwired alarms the battery drawer is on the side or the back and slides out with the unit still on the ceiling. Some older units make you twist the alarm off its mounting plate first, which unplugs the wiring harness. If you are taking the alarm all the way off the plate, cut power at the breaker first.

Why is my smoke detector chirping with no battery in it?

Two causes.

On a hardwired unit, the alarm is still getting 120 volts through the harness, so pulling the battery changes nothing. Cut the breaker or unplug the harness to confirm.

On a battery-only unit, a capacitor inside holds a small residual charge and can chirp for a minute or two after the battery comes out. If it keeps going past that, the alarm has hit end of life and is chirping on stored charge. That one is a unit replacement, not a battery. What goes wrong if the battery dies?

The alarm becomes a plastic disc on the ceiling.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that about 3 out of 5 home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or with alarms that did not work. When an installed alarm failed to operate in a reported home fire, a dead or missing battery was the cause about a quarter of the time.

Missing is the word that matters. The most common way a battery goes missing is that somebody pulled it at 3 a.m. to stop a chirp and never walked back up the ladder. The U.S. Fire Administration has been making that point for decades, and it is still the failure mode that shows up in the reports.

An annual swap costs about the price of a sandwich and takes ten minutes for the whole house. The gap it closes is the whole reason the alarm is up there.
