Why is my house still humid with the AC running?

An air conditioner pulls water out of the air only while it’s actually running. If the house stays muggy with the AC on, the unit is usually short-cycling because it’s oversized, the fan is set to On instead of Auto, or a dirty filter is choking the airflow. Aim for 30 to 50 percent indoor humidity.

What humidity level should my house be at in summer?

Between 30 and 50 percent. That’s the range where the air feels comfortable and mold, dust mites, and that clammy August stickiness don’t get a foothold. The EPA puts a hard ceiling on it:

Keep indoor humidity below 60 percent relative humidity (ideally between 30 and 50 percent), if possible.

Above 60 percent, the trouble starts. Mold grows on window sills and in closets, dust mites multiply in bedding, and wood floors and doors swell. A cheap hygrometer from the hardware store, $10 to $15, tells you where the house actually sits. Set it on a shelf in the room that feels worst and read it after the AC has been running an hour.

Temperature and humidity are two separate dials. A room can read 72 degrees and still feel swampy at 65 percent humidity, which is why cranking the thermostat colder doesn’t fix a damp house. It just makes it a cold, damp house.

How does an air conditioner control humidity?

By condensation. Warm house air gets pulled across the cold evaporator coil inside the air handler, and the water in that air beads up on the coil the same way it beads on a glass of iced tea. That water runs down into a pan and out through the condensate drain, usually a white PVC line that empties outside or into a floor drain. If that line clogs, the water backs up and leaks inside instead of draining.

The catch is that dehumidifying is a byproduct of runtime. The coil only strips moisture while the system is running and the coil is cold. A short burst of cooling barely touches the humidity. A long, steady run wrings a lot of water out. That single fact explains almost every damp-house complaint below.

Why is my house humid even though the AC is running?

Three causes cover most of it, and the first is the big one.

The unit is oversized and short-cycling. An air conditioner that’s too big for the house cools the rooms in a few minutes, hits the thermostat setting, and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull much water out of the air. The rooms end up cold and clammy: right temperature, wrong humidity. On for five minutes, off for ten, over and over is the signature. A right-sized unit runs longer, gentler cycles and dries the house as it goes.

The fan is set to On. More on this below, but a blower left running around the clock re-evaporates the water sitting on the coil and pushes it right back into the rooms.

Airflow is restricted. A clogged air filter, a filter with a MERV rating too fine for the blower, or a dirty coil all cut the air moving across the coil. Less airflow means less moisture removed, and in bad cases the coil ices over, which shuts down dehumidifying entirely. That overlaps with a system that’s not cooling well, so check the filter first either way.

There’s also the moisture coming in from outside the AC’s job: open windows on a humid day, a bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan that isn’t vented outside, a damp basement, an uncovered sump pit, or a crawlspace with bare dirt. The AC can only keep up with so much water load before it falls behind.

A dryer duct that has come loose behind the machine belongs on that list too. Every load then dumps its water into the room instead of outside, which is a lot of moisture to hand the AC: how often should I clean my dryer vent?

Should I set my thermostat fan to On or Auto?

Auto, if you want a drier house. On Auto, the blower runs only while the system is actively cooling, so the coil gets to drain between cycles.

On the On setting, the blower never stops. Every time the compressor shuts off, the fan keeps blowing house air across a coil that’s still wet with the water it just condensed. That water evaporates straight back into the rooms before it can drip down the drain. You’ve undone part of the dehumidifying you just paid for. Switching a single setting from On to Auto is the cheapest humidity fix there is, and it’s free.

When do I need a dehumidifier?

When the AC is dialed in and the house still reads above 50 percent. If the filter’s clean, the fan’s on Auto, the unit runs long cycles, and a hygrometer still shows 55 or 60 percent on humid days, the cooling load and the moisture load are just mismatched. That’s common in the Southeast and in finished basements anywhere.

A portable dehumidifier handles one problem room or a basement and runs $200 to $300. ENERGY STAR notes the ideal relative humidity for comfort sits around 30 to 50 percent, and a unit sized to the space holds it there. Empty the tank or run the drain hose to a floor drain so it doesn’t shut off full.

For a whole house that runs humid, a whole-home dehumidifier ties into the ductwork and runs $1,500 to $2,500 installed. It’s the right call when the AC is correctly sized but the climate simply carries more water than cooling alone can remove.

When should I call a professional?

When the unit is short-cycling and the filter and fan setting are already right. An oversized system is a design problem, not a maintenance one, and the real fixes (a two-stage or variable-speed system, or a dedicated dehumidifier) need a pro to spec. A proper ACCA Manual J load calculation is how a good contractor sizes a replacement so it runs long enough to dry the house.

Call a pro too if the coil keeps icing over after you’ve changed the filter, or if the AC runs constantly and still won’t drop the humidity. Those point to low refrigerant or a coil issue, neither of which a homeowner can diagnose by eye. A refrigerant charge is also work that federal rules keep to certified techs.
