My GFCI outlet won't reset. What now?

A GFCI that won’t reset has one of three problems: the outlet isn’t getting power, a ground fault is still active on the circuit, or the device itself has failed. Check the breaker panel first, then unplug everything the outlet protects and try again. If it still won’t latch, the GFCI needs replacing.
Why won’t a GFCI reset after it trips?
Because the outlet won’t let it. A GFCI checks its own conditions before it latches, and it refuses to reset when it can’t guarantee protection. The industry name for this is reset lockout, and it’s a feature, not a defect.
Leviton, which makes the outlets, puts it plainly:
Reset Lockout adds another layer of protection by blocking an outlet from resetting when conditions are not safe.
Four conditions lock it out: no power coming into the outlet, a ground fault still live on the circuit, line and load wires reversed behind the face, and internal failure from age or moisture.
Before chasing any of those, press the button properly. RESET takes a firm push, in until it clicks and stays. A half press pops right back out and looks exactly like a broken outlet.
Is the outlet even getting power?
Start at the breaker panel, not the outlet. A GFCI needs incoming power to latch, so on a dead circuit RESET does nothing at all: no click, no hold, no life.
A tripped breaker rests in the middle of its travel, not all the way to OFF, and it’s easy to miss on a quick scan. Push it fully OFF first, then back to ON, and go try RESET again. Some houses have the GFCI in the panel instead, a breaker with its own TEST button, and a tripped one resets the same way: fully OFF, then ON.
If the breakers all look right, hunt upstream. One GFCI can protect a string of ordinary outlets wired behind it, and installers chain circuits in ways that ignore room boundaries. The dead outlet in the garage may be protected by a GFCI in the hall bathroom.
An outlet with no TEST and RESET buttons that’s gone dead is the tell: it’s almost always riding on a GFCI somewhere else. Press RESET on every GFCI in the house (bathrooms, kitchen, garage, basement, outdoors). Five minutes, and it solves a lot of dead-outlet mysteries.
What if it resets but trips again right away?
Then the reset is working fine and the GFCI is catching a real leak. The device cuts power when about 5 milliamps of current goes missing from the circuit, and it will keep cutting until the leak is gone.
Unplug everything the outlet feeds, downstream outlets included, and reset again. If it holds empty, plug devices back in one at a time until the trip points at the faulty one. Give a fridge or freezer a full cycle before calling it cleared, because the defrost heater is the usual offender.
If it trips with nothing plugged in, look for water. Outdoor boxes after a storm and garage outlets near damp concrete are the usual suspects, and a wet box needs to dry out completely before the GFCI will hold.

How do I know the GFCI itself is dead?
Rule everything else out first: breaker on, other GFCIs reset, nothing plugged in, box dry. If RESET still won’t latch after all that, the device is worn out.
Age alone gets them. InterNACHI puts a GFCI’s service life at 15 to 25 years, and bathroom and outdoor units run to the short end of that because humidity works into the electronics. A unit that’s been failing the monthly TEST check was already on its way out.
Newer outlets announce their own failure. GFCIs built since mid-2015 test themselves automatically under UL 943, the safety standard the devices are certified to. The self-test repeats every few hours, and a unit that fails it cuts power and locks out the reset, or warns with a blinking light or a chirp, depending on the brand.
Replacement is the cheap part. A 15-amp GFCI runs $15 to $30 and swaps in about 20 minutes with the breaker off. The same job from an electrician is a standard service call, worth it if working inside an outlet box isn’t your idea of a Saturday.
When should I call an electrician?
When the outlet shows damage you can see or smell: scorch marks, a melted face, buzzing, crackling, or a hot cover plate. Leave the breaker off and make the call.
When a brand-new GFCI won’t reset either. A fresh outlet that refuses to latch usually has the line and load wires swapped on the back, and sorting that out means testing which cable in the box is hot. That’s an electrician’s half hour, usually a $100 to $200 visit.
And when the same box keeps eating GFCIs. An outlet location that kills a device every couple of years has a moisture problem or a loose connection behind it, and that’s worth a professional look before the next one goes in.
